“And when I am lifted up on the cross, I will draw everyone to myself.” John 12:32
Jesus spoke these words during the final week before he would be executed on a rough wooden cross just outside Jerusalem. He knew what would happen to him. He also knew the difference that this single death would make in effecting salvation for everyone around the world who puts their trust in Jesus Christ, not just as Christ crucified but also as the Lord raised to life again on Easter Sunday.
As followers of Jesus Christ in Hertford, this cross must be part of what defines us. We are shaped by the cross as an example of humble service, in sacrificial love and in knowing that this death brought life to us. We recall this death in our communion services and as we celebrate the events of Easter but it also underlies everything else that we are and do.
This cross is the wisdom and power of God. This year we will look at what that meant for Jesus and his closest friends in the week leading up to his death and resurrection. We will look at how this cross shapes God’s people in every part of our life in community together. Our hope and prayer is that as we continue to lift Jesus up, each one of us will be drawn closer to him. For those that have yet to know him we would love you to find in him the author of life itself. For those that already live in a relationship with God through Jesus Christ we would love to see that relationship deepen and find greater expression in Hertford and beyond.
