Who do you say I am? Mark chapter 8
Throughout Mark’s gospel, we see Jesus meeting all kinds of people and changing their lives, both physically and spiritually. This is especially true of the disciples, and in particular Peter. At this pivotal time in Jesus’ ministry we see Peter moving on in his understanding of not only who Jesus was, but why he had come. Wrapped up in his statement “You are the Messiah”, lies thousands of years of Jewish history and the promise of future freedom. But how relevant are these words to us in the 21st Century?

Instructions for Following Mark 8:31-35, 9:33-37 & 10:17-22
In this section of Mark’s Gospel the disciples, Peter and the rich man all have a different understanding of what it means to follow Jesus. From these individual encounters we learn that to truly follow Jesus we must always see the big picture; think like a servant; use what we are given and simply to take the next step that God reveals.
6.30 pm – “Who will build the house?” – shorter time of worship led by our young people.
Sunday 2 March 2008
9.15 & 11.00 am – Colin Yarker leading (Sarah Benham leading first part of service) and Steve Fenton preaching
Triumphal Entry Mark 11:1-19
This well known passage is rooted in the Old Testament – Jesus’ entrance into Jerusalem on a donkey (Zechariah 9:9) and his comments in verse 17: “My house will be called a house of prayer” (Isaiah 56:7) and, “You have turned it into a den of robbers” (Jeremiah 7:11). This wider context helps us understand what God expects to find when he comes amongst his people.
6.30 pm – Steve Fenton leading communion service and Dan Foster preaching
Home is where the Heart is Luke 9:57-62
This phrase could be interpreted in two ways; either “Where you live is where your heart is” or “Wherever your true heart is, that’s your home”. If we would follow Jesus He must be where our heart is; we must make our home with Him.

Understanding the times 2 Kings 2:11-25
God had taken the prophet Elijah (v11) and raised up Elisha through whom He continued to work and speak (v14). But the company of prophets from Jericho were intent on bringing Elijah back. However, this was not a time for looking back; not a time for being passive; not a time for standing still and not a time for stopping.

9.15 & 11.00 am - Steve Fenton leading our Communion Services and Paul Davies preaching
Jesus, one of us Mark 14:43-51
In Mark 14 & 15 we see how Jesus suffers many things; he is mis-understood, betrayed, abandoned, arrested, accused, disowned, framed, abused and crucified. Jesus therefore can empathise with us in our suffering. However, we have also misunderstood, betrayed and abandoned Him and we need the forgiveness He brings through the cross. That Jesus identifies with those who suffer is a comfort to us but it should also drive us to identify with those who suffer.
6.30 pm - Jo Pierce leading and Steve Fenton preaching
A dignified surrender Luke 22:39-48 & 54-62
In this passage we see Jesus as the epitome of assured commitment and dignified surrender to the will of His Father. We learn how to respond when our prayers are not answered in the way that we wanted. Perhaps most importantly of all, we learn that when friends fail and God is all we have, then we discover that God is all we need.
