9.15 and 11.00 am Walk by faith, not by sight Hebrews 11:1 - 13 & 2 Corinthians 5:7
Steve Fenton
There is a lot more to the pithy saying, "Walk by faith, not by sight" than meets the eye. It mitigates against our desire for certainty and control and invites us instead to live a life of trust and vulnerability. Paradoxically it is trust and vulnerability, not certainty and control, that leads to the deeper relationship with God many of us yearn for. What better time than the start of a new year to revisit what it really means to walk by faith, not by sight?
6.30 pm Equipped for the year ahead Ephesians 3:7 - 21
John Low
Facing a new year in our journey of faith, we look at Paul’s petition to God the Father for the Christians in Ephesus. He envisages an individual personal relationship with God through Christ Jesus that is audacious, promising remarkable resources, equipping each one to face the Christian road ahead with a confidence and assurance that’s almost beyond human comprehension. If this weren’t enough, Paul urges us to have our roots and foundation in Christ’s all pervading love so that we can be completely filled with the nature of God. What a way to face the spiritual, physical and emotional challenges of 2009.
Sunday 11 January
9.15 and 11.00 am Encouraging Missionary Disciples 2 Chronicles 34:29-33 & Matthew 4:18-22
Geoff Colmer
The Baptist Union is placing an emphasis on “encouraging missionary disciples”. Rev. Geoff Colmer, the Regional Minister for our area, will be helping us understand from Scripture what this means for us.
6.30 pm God the Builder Nehemiah 1
Steve Fenton
In this opening passage Nehemiah looks up at God’s greatness (vs. 4-6), looks in and confesses (vs. 6-7), looks back at God’s promises (vs. 8-10), and looks ahead (v. 11) as he commits his plans and the future to the Lord. Nehemiah inspires us to respond positively to a need and to be willing to be the answer to our own prayers.
Sunday 18 January
9.15 and 11.00 am Waiting for the Spirit Acts 1:1-11
Steve Fenton
Acts 1 is a bridge between the end of Jesus’ earthly ministry (the ascension) and the continuation of his ministry, from heaven, through the Holy Spirit. Jesus’ final command to his followers was to wait for the gift of the Spirit: “You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you and you will be my witnesses” (v8). It remains the same today – to be Jesus’ witnesses it is essential to receive, and welcome, the gift the Father promised, the Holy Spirit.
6.30 pm Laying good foundations Nehemiah 2
Dan Foster
Nehemiah 2 shows us the need for laying foundations of prayer and planning before embarking on anything for God.
Sunday 25 January
9.15 & 11.00 am Receiving the Holy Spirit Acts 2
Steve Fenton
Without the Holy Spirit Christian discipleship is impossible; there can be no understanding without the Spirit of Truth, no fellowship without the unity of the Spirit, no Christ-like character and no effective witness without the life giving power of the Spirit. The outpouring of the Spirit on the day of Pentecost (Acts 2) began a new era which continues today, enabling Christian witness, enabling response and growing the church.
