Sunday 7 June
am Reaching out to those in need Matthew 25:31-40
Matt Barlow from CAP
In this passage we are reminded that God is concerned for those in need, and that we need to be concerned too. Each time we show compassion and reach out in practical ways to help those in need we serve not just our neighbours, but the Lord himself (v40). It is this principle which underpins our church’s partnership with CAP (Christians Against Poverty) which we will formerly launch today.
pm Doing the right thing …
in a sex mad society 1 Corinthians 6:14-20 (page 210)
Steve Fenton
Britain is in a state of sexual meltdown where the only criteria to validate sexual activity is generally considered to be consent between adults in private. And yet the emotional, psychological, financial and spiritual damage to society resulting from our increasingly permissive attitude towards sex is astronomical. This evening we explore how the Bible has a far better vision for human sexuality than the confusion of our present culture.
Sunday 14 June
9.15 & 11.00 am Good News Strategy Acts 18
Steve Fenton
Paul had a clear strategy for sharing the gospel. First he went to the synagogue (v4) but when the Jews refused to listen he turned his attention to the Gentiles (6), taking the message to them in their homes (7). In sharing the gospel Paul kept the word of God central (v11, cf. v28) and made sure he expended his energy on people willing to listen and was ready to move on from people unwilling to change (6).
6.30 pm Reconciliation 2 Corinthians 5:16-21
Mission is reconciliation. This begins with God reconciling himself to his creation, which in turn leads to reconciliation with one another. We are to be involved in this ministry of reconciliation.
Sunday 21 June
9.15 & 11.00 am What makes glory glorious Luke 9: 28-36
David Lockwood
This episode is a turning point in Luke’s gospel as what we know as the ‘transfiguration’ provides us with a glimpse of what the future holds for Jesus - both his suffering and his glory. As Moses had led the exodus of Israel from slavery in Egypt to freedom in the promised land, so Jesus is going to lead God’s new people - those who believe in him - to the freedom of life in God’s new Kingdom.
Sunday 28 June
am Losing to win Acts 21: 17-27
Steve Frenton
Paul, representing the Gentile Christian believers, meets face to face with James, the leader of the Jewish Christian believers, in Jerusalem (18). In his absence Paul had been misrepresented (21) and an atmosphere of mistrust towards him created. The wise and humble way in which James and Paul dealt with this potentially divisive situation provides an object lesson in the importance of keeping the gospel primary and all else, including personal reputations and preferences, secondary.
pm Worship & Testimony Jeremiah 1
Michaela Naughten
This evening we have four Christians from the Far Eat ministering through song and testimony, accompanied by former ANCC student Michaela Naughten who currently lives and works in their country. This is a rare opportunity to share fellowship and encourage Christians from another part of the world who do not share the same freedom of worship that we experience in the UK. This evening’s offering will go towards supporting and encouraging them.
