Pentecost Sunday 1 Thess. 5: 12-24
Throughout this letter Paul’s emphasis is steadfastness in the Lord and continuing growth of faith and love. He urges the Thessalonians to deal with integrity towards one another and to grow spiritually (5:12-22). Pentecost is the day Christians celebrate the outpouring of the Holy Spirit (Acts 1-2). Today we consider how to heed Paul’s plea, 1 Thess.5:19, ‘Do not quench the Holy Spirit.’

Transformed by Christ Philippians 2:12-30
Paul commands us to continue to work out our salvation (v12), under God’s motivation and power (v13), to reach our communities with the Gospel of Jesus Christ (v16, 22). The context of Philippians 2 is that we live lives of humility and obedience, ‘shining like stars in the universe’ (v14). It is a reminder that God does not stockpile faith in our lives. Rather, as we ‘work out’ in faith and obedience, God ‘works in’ our lives and situations.

The writing on the wall Daniel 5
As chapter 5 opens Daniel is more than 80 years old. Nebuchadnezzar’s successors had marginalised him, but when Belshazzar found himself in trouble, he called on God’s man. Daniel is an example of how to stand for God over the long haul and how one godly life can have a huge influence.
